Weekend in Elbe, Washington
Looking for the perfect small-town weekend getaway? Nestled just outside Mount Rainier National Park, Elbe may be tiny, but it packs a surprising amount of adventure, history, and charm into one unforgettable destination. From sleeping in a train caboose and riding historic railcars to horseback riding through the forest and enjoying incredible local food, there's so much more to this little town than meets the eye. Here's how we spent a weekend exploring one of Washington's hidden gems.
Friday: Check In & Unwind
We arrived Friday evening and checked into the Hobo Inn, where each room is inside a restored train caboose. It was such a fun and unique place to stay! After settling in, we walked over to Mt. Rainier Railroad Dining Co. for dinner inside a historic train car. I ordered one of their delicious burgers while Jeremy went with the ribs—both were fantastic and the atmosphere made the meal even more memorable.
Saturday: Trail Rides, Trains & Local Eats
We started the morning with one of my favorite experiences of the trip: horseback riding with EZ Times Horse Rides. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the horses, the history of Elbe, and the surrounding area. Riding through the peaceful forest with a family-owned business made the experience feel extra special.
After our ride, we stopped at Scale Burgers for lunch. The burgers definitely lived up to the hype, the fries were amazing, and of course we couldn't pass up a milkshake!
That afternoon, we climbed aboard the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad for one of the most relaxing parts of the weekend. We rode in the beautifully restored Parlor Car, complete with comfortable leather seating and a bar serving snacks and beverages while we enjoyed the scenic ride through the forest.
To wrap up the day, we grabbed pizza from LB Hobo Pizza Car, where we enjoyed dinner under the covered outdoor seating before calling it a night.
Sunday: Coffee, History & Heading Home
Before heading home, we grabbed coffee from the Elbe Market, which is also a great stop for local honey, jams, souvenirs, and even ice cream. Keep your eyes open—you might even run into Sasquatch!
We also made a quick stop at the historic Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church, one of the town's most iconic landmarks, before taking the scenic drive home through the forests and along the water.
Why We Loved Elbe
Elbe may be a small town, but it leaves a big impression. From sleeping in a historic train caboose and riding beautifully restored railcars to horseback riding through the forest and supporting incredible family-owned businesses, every stop made this weekend feel special. It's the kind of place that reminds you to slow down, soak in the scenery, and appreciate the simple joys of small-town adventures.
